SMCC HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2024

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The 2024 class has been selected for inclusion in the St. Mary Central Catholic High School Athletic and Achievement Hall of Fame. This year’s group of inductees includes five individuals, one married couple and one team.

Aaron Ebert, a standout golfer for the Panthers, will be heading into the St. Mary Central Catholic Hall of Fame. Ebert graduated from high school in 2008 as valedictorian and recipient of the Lee Zierolf Award. He was a four-time state qualifier in golf, earning second team all-state honors while leading his team to a third-place finish in Division III in 2007. In his freshman and sophomore seasons of 2004 and 2005, the Panthers ended seventh and tied for eighth, respectively, in the state. Currently, Ebert is tied for the best nine-hole score (31) in school history and was on teams that set school records for the top 18-hole (295) and nine-hole (141) scores. He also received varsity letters in swimming and basketball before moving on to play four years of golf at NCAA Division II University of Montevallo, where he acquired a bachelor’s degree in business administration. A certified public accountant, Ebert also has master’s and doctoral degrees from Duke University.

Longtime supporters Dick and Judy Kinzel will also be joining the hall of fame. In 2014, the couple agreed to make a significant donation to Sandusky Central Catholic School for the renovation of its primary gymnasium, The Den, and other facility upgrades. The Kinzel Center is now used for not just sporting events, but also for graduations, school musicals and other activities. Both Dick and Judy have served on numerous school committees and been philanthropists for Catholic education for decades. Dick and Judy are the parents of SMCC graduates Stacy ’89 and Derek ’90.

Toby Notestine, who has served a variety of roles at SCCS over the years, has also been chosen for the hall of fame. A 1971 SMCC graduate, Notestine currently teaches physical education, is an assistant varsity football coach and handles field maintenance at his alma mater. During his time at SCCS, he has also been the head varsity football coach, athletic director and dean of students. Over his 50 years in education, he has also coached track and field, basketball and wrestling. Notestine is a United States Army veteran who served on active duty from 1971-74 and in the Ohio Military Reserve from 2002-21, retiring with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Bowling Green State University and is married to the former Roberta Nath, another member of the SMCC class of 1971.

Arianne Rodriguez, a 2008 SMCC alumna, is also joining the hall of fame this year. During her time in blue and gold, Rodriguez established herself as a superior distance runner who earned four varsity letters in both cross country and track, and also participated in swimming for two seasons. In cross country, she made four trips to the state meet and was a four-time First Team All-Sandusky Bay Conference selection. The Lady Panthers’ Most Valuable Runner on four occasions, Rodriguez also received the Coaches Award in track her senior year after she was a regional qualifier in the 1600-meter run. She went on to compete in cross country at Saint Mary’s College in Indiana, where she graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology.

Rodriguez later acquired a doctorate in biology from Northwestern University and currently works for a Chicago law firm as a scientific advisor. Still an avid runner, she has completed the Chicago Marathon three times and several half marathons.

Former SMCC three-sport standout Troy Roth is another 2024 hall-of-fame inductee. Roth graduated from high school in 1988 and garnered a total of eight varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball while playing on successful teams. As a senior in football, he was his squad’s Hitter of the Year while being recognized as a Second Team All-SBC honoree on both offense and defense. Roth recorded 14 interceptions over his final two seasons and was a second team all-conference pick on defense as a junior. On the basketball court his senior campaign, he was named First Team All-SBC, first team all-district and Honorable Mention All-Ohio while leading the conference in scoring with more than 20 points per game. Roth shot 50.7 percent from three-point range in 1987-88, which is the second-best single season percentage in school history, and finished his career with 233 assists, which ranks fifth on the Panthers’ all-time list. He was also a three-year letterman in baseball and an honorable mention all-conference player as a senior when SMCC went 14-0 in the SBC and 25-3 overall. Roth has worked in education for more than 30 years and presently serves as superintendent for the Bellevue City School District.

The final individual entering the hall of fame in the 2024 class is state champion Alex Slattery. A 2009 SMCC alumnus, Slattery received three varsity letters in track and field for the Panthers, capping off his career with a Division III state championship in the pole vault after finishing as the runner-up in that event as a junior. He was also a part of the school’s 4x100-meter relay team in 2009 that ended fourth in the state. Over his SMCC career, the versatile Slattery also competed in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays, and in 100-, 200- and 400-meter races. His pole vault of 15 feet and 4x100 time of 43.61 still stand as school records. He also lettered in tennis for the Panthers before moving on to participate in track and field at Kent State University, where he secured his bachelor’s degree in computer information systems. In June 2022, he founded Gadwen, an information technology professional services firm. Slattery oversees Gadwen’s day-to-day operations and strategic direction.

SMCC’s 1972 boys golf team will also be enshrined in the hall of fame. Back then, golf was played in the spring and teams consisted of four players with all of the scores being counted. Led by head coach Ray Miller, the Panthers won a playoff at the district event to advance to the 1972 class A state tournament at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course, where they finished fifth. Playing in the postseason without two starters from the previous year who were studying with their class in England, the foursome of seniors Chuck Riesterer and Dave Anders, junior Craig Fitz and freshman Jeff Erney carried SMCC to a sectional championship and runner-up district finish. Before their tournament run, the 1972 Panthers won 17 dual matches, then a school record.

The 2024 hall of famers will be recognized in The Kinzel Center during halftime of the Panthers’ Jan. 18, 2025 varsity boys basketball game against Old Fort. On Jan. 19, the annual hall-of-fame banquet and induction ceremony takes place at Sandusky Yacht Club starting at 2 p.m. The public is invited to the yacht club with tickets costing $35 each. Tickets must be purchased prior to Jan. 11 by contacting Gary Erney (419-626-5389) or Jack Runner (419-656-4445), who are members of the SMCC Athletic and Achievement Hall of Fame Committee. Tickets can also be purchased through Venmo at: @SMCCHOF.

$100,000 Gift Celebrates Barb Roth’s 90th Birthday

Nov. 5, 2024 - Sandusky, OH — Sandusky Central Catholic School (SCCS) is thrilled to announce a generous $100,000 gift from the Tom and Barb Roth family, in celebration of Barb Roth’s 90th birthday on November 6. This transformative donation, dedicated to enhancing SCCS’s science program, honors Tom and Barb’s lifelong love for the school and the pivotal role it has played in the Roth family’s lives.

This gift will fund improvements to the science building, as well as state-of-the-art technology that will open new doors for students’ scientific exploration. The donation holds special meaning for the Roth family, as they reflect on how much has changed in education since Barb’s time as a student, when women were often encouraged to pursue home economics classes over science. With this gift, the Roth family’s vision is to inspire all students, regardless of gender, to fall in love with science during their high school years.

“This donation is made in special recognition of our mom’s 90th birthday, her love for SCCS, and the role the school has played in all of our lives,” said Dr. Kevin Roth, representing the family of eight kids (who all attended SCCS) Kevin, Lori, Amy, Ty, J, Aaron, Troy, and Yon . “Our hope is that this gift from the Tom and Barb Roth family helps ensure that students—both young men and women—have the resources to dive into science, embrace discovery, and pursue their passions.”

The Sandusky Central Catholic School community expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the Roth family for their generosity and for continuing to invest in the future of SCCS students. This incredible donation will empower a new generation of scientists, thinkers, and innovators for many years to come.

Baxter Takes Over Wrestling Post

Mr. Michael Baxter has taken over as the head varsity wrestling coach at St. Mary Central Catholic High School and will lead the Panthers’ storied program in preparation for and during the upcoming 2024-25 season. Baxter served as an SMCC assistant coach the past two seasons under Jared Opfer, who will remain on the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.

“I think Sandusky Central Catholic was in a perfect position, for dramatic and incredible growth, two years ago when I began coaching as an assistant,” Baxter said. “It starts and ends with surrounding yourself with great people, and Jared Opfer and Rick Bellamy are high-character guys who first and foremost want to make an impact on young athletes. After people is the environment. In an uncertain and polarizing world, faith-based education has tremendous value that is very attractive to many families. Last but not least is tradition. St. Mary had success in the early 1990s and 2000s unlike any area athletic program had before or has had since. Coach Jude Roth and Coach Mark Hiemstra led the program to seven state titles, including five in a row, and many other top-10 finishes. St. Mary is a wrestling school and we are working tirelessly to return this program to its standard.”

The Panthers’ rich wrestling history includes state championships in 1994, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. Individually, SMCC has 29 state crowns by 17 wrestlers. Opfer, who was inducted into the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2019, earned four state crowns in the late 1990s in finishing with a 211-4 career record.

Besides Opfer, other assistant coaches making up Baxter’s first staff are 1986 state champion Rick Bellamy and Gary Howell, who are both SMCC graduates.

“In terms of goals, I think it starts with knowing where your feet are and staying grounded. Our goal is to get better each and every day,” Baxter said. “I’m most concerned with these young athletes knowing how to compete hard,  outwork everyone they can, stay humble in victory, gracious in defeat, and attack every day with gratitude. When we learn how to do that, everything else will take care of itself.”

Before coming to SMCC in 2022, Baxter coached wrestling at the collegiate level. He was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Mercyhurst University, for four seasons (2018-22) after serving as the head coach at Coker College for two years (2016-18).

At Mercyhurst, Baxter wrestled for two seasons before injuries derailed his career. Over his freshman and sophomore campaigns (2008-09 and 2009-10) on the mat for the Lakers, he posted a 41-23 overall record. When he could no longer compete, Baxter turned to coaching and helped the program as an assistant while an undergraduate and graduate student.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Michael Baxter take over leadership of our wrestling program,” SCCS athletic director Steve Ruthsatz said. “With Michael’s two years of experience here and Jared remaining a part of the program, this will be a seamless transition.

“Since Michael arrived here a couple of years ago, he has made an impact on the program with our number of wrestlers increasing at all levels, including high school, junior high and in our PAW (Panther Amateur Wrestling) organization. I truly believe that Michael will be a great leader, do a fantastic job developing our wrestlers and continue to grow the program.”

The Director of Development for the Ohio Athletic Committee, Baxter is originally from Sandusky and graduated from Perkins High School in 2008. While wrestling in Division II at 125 pounds, he finished third in the state as a senior after placing seventh the year before.

Baxter earned his bachelor’s degree in sports medicine (2013) and master’s in exercise science (2014), both from Mercyhurst.

Youskievicz Named Girls Basketball Coach

From Sandusky Register Report

SANDUSKY — St. Mary Central Catholic named Kevin Youskievicz as its new girls basketball coach on Thursday.

Youskievicz is a 1985 SMCC graduate and has previously coached at the junior high level in Sandusky Central Catholic Schools for 13 years. He's also coached the high school track team.

“I am honored to be selected to lead the girls basketball program at SMCC,” Youskievicz said in a news release. “I miss coaching basketball and this is another way for me to give back to my alma mater. I thank athletic director Steve Ruthsatz, the search committee and the administration for giving me this opportunity.

”I’m looking to build a strong culture of competitiveness within the girls basketball program, and that starts with fundamentals being instilled at the biddy level. Successful programs are built on a solid foundation of fundamentals, discipline and consistency, and that’s what I hope to bring to SMCC girls basketball.”

Bobby Gossom stepped down as coach at the end of winless 2023-24 season.

Youskievicz's last basketball coaching job was in 2021-22 when he coached the SCCS eighth-grade team to a 15-3 record and a share of the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division regular season championship and the SBC River tournament title.

For two seasons from 2016-17, Youskievicz served as head coach of SMCC’s boys and girls track and field programs. The SMCC boys placed third in the state in Division III in 2016.

“We are extremely excited and very fortunate to have Coach Youskievicz take over leadership of our girls basketball program,” SMCC athletic director Steve Ruthsatz said. “We had a larger pool of applicants than the two previous searches we’ve had for this position and Kevin seems to be the right fit at this time.

“Kevin has coached at our school for many years and has had some really good student-athletes and teams. He has won championships here and I truly believe that Kevin will be a great leader and do a fantastic job with our girls basketball program.”

Outside of coaching, Youskievicz is a longtime supporter of Sandusky Central Catholic and its athletic programs. He has served as president of the Central Catholic Athletic Boosters and is a current member of the SMCC Athletic and Achievement Hall of Fame Committee.

Youskievicz was a two-time varsity letterman in basketball at SMCC for teams that went a combined 33-12 over his junior and senior years. During his senior season in 1984-85, while playing with Ruthsatz, the Panthers set single-season school records for points per game (82.4), scoring margin per game (21.1) and field goal percentage (54.6). Youskievicz also lettered in track and field for the Panthers.

Youskievicz began working with the City of Sandusky Police Department in 1993 and retired as a detective sergeant in June 2021. He currently serves in a part-time role with the SPD.

After receiving his Bachelor of Science in business administration from Otterbein University, Youskievicz graduated from the Sandusky Police Academy in 1993. He later took classes at Ohio State University’s John Glenn College of Public Affairs.

Youskievicz is married to Julie (Ritzenthaler) Youskievicz, who was a senior basketball player on the Panthers' 1984 SBC girls championship team.

They have two children who are former student-athletes and alumni of SMCC: Joseph (2012) and Alyson (2016).

SMCC Hall of Fame Class of 2023

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The 2023 class has been selected for inclusion in the St. Mary Central Catholic High School Athletic and Achievement Hall of Fame. This year’s group of inductees includes one team and five individuals.

The team that will go into the Hall of Fame is St. Mary Central Catholic’s 2003 baseball squad. Twenty years ago, the Panthers claimed sectional, district and regional championships, advancing to the Division IV state semifinals where they lost a close 4-2 decision to Minster. Under head coach Denny Link, SMCC won its second straight sectional and district titles in 2003 before capturing the school’s first and only regional crown and spot in the state final four. The Panthers posted a 21-10 overall record during the 2003 season while playing in the rugged Sandusky Bay Conference.

The late Robert J. (Bob) Daniel will also be heading into the SMCC Hall of Fame. A lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Daniel graduated from the high school in 1948. Throughout his life, he held many different leadership positions at the church, school and with the Diocese of Toledo. Daniel played significant roles in major fundraising campaigns from 1950-2000, was the church’s business manager for a decade and served as the elementary school bookkeeper for nine years. In 1993, he earned the Golden Bell Award, a top honor presented by the parish. Daniel passed away in June 2013 at the age of 82.

Longtime SMCC teacher Steve Kohler will also be joining the hall of fame. For more than 40 years, Kohler has taught history, government and other subjects in the high school. During his time in Sandusky, he has also been a successful coach and administrator at SMCC and became the school’s first recipient of an honorary diploma in May 2023. Kohler graduated from Gibsonburg High School in 1979 and Bowling Green State University in 1983.

Another distinguished educator, Joanne (Mastelone) Ruthsatz, has also been chosen for the hall of fame. A 1974 SMCC alumna, Dr. Ruthsatz recently retired as an assistant professor of psychology from The Ohio State University at Mansfield. Over the past 25 years, she has become one of the nation’s top researchers on child prodigies, discovering a genetic link between them and autism. Ruthsatz’s research has been published in several well-known scientific journals and publications, and she has been interviewed on the “60 Minutes” television program. In 2016, Ruthsatz finished a book titled, “The Prodigy’s Cousin: The Family Link Between Autism and Extraordinary Talent,” which was co-authored with her daughter, Kimberly (Ruthsatz) Stephens, a 1999 SMCC graduate. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green, Ruthsatz went on to obtain a master’s and a doctorate in psychology at Case Western Reserve University.

Former standout student-athlete Rodney Scott, from the SMCC class of 1991, is another 2023 hall-of-fame inductee. As a senior, Scott excelled on the football field and was a First Team All-Ohio defensive lineman for the Panthers when they made it to the 1990 Division V state championship game. During his football career, SMCC put together a 30-8 overall record during his final three seasons, including 11-3 in 1990 and 12-1 in 1989. Scott accumulated nearly 200 tackles, including 90 (17 for loss) his senior year. He was a three-time varsity letterman in football and also tallied four letters in wrestling. As a wrestler, he won three sectional crowns and was a two-time state qualifier.

The final member of the 2023 hall-of-fame class is Conor Whelan. Whelan was a Division III state champion wrestler for the Panthers at 140 pounds as a senior when he recorded a 32-4 overall record. A 1996 SMCC alumnus, Whelan placed fifth in the state as a junior and was a part of the school’s first state title-winning wrestling squad in 1994. He was also a solid football player on both sides of the ball for the blue and gold. Whelan presently serves as a teacher with Sandusky City Schools.

The 2023 hall of famers will be recognized in The Kinzel Center during halftime of the Panthers’ Jan. 13, 2024 varsity boys basketball game against Margaretta. On Jan. 14, the annual hall-of-fame banquet and induction ceremony will take place at Sandusky Yacht Club starting at 2 p.m. The public is invited to the yacht club with tickets costing $35 each. Tickets must be purchased prior to Jan. 7 by contacting Gary Erney (419-626-5389) or Jack Runner (419-656-4445), who are members of the SMCC Athletic and Achievement Hall of Fame Committee.
