Spiritual Life

Our Catholic faith is apparent every day at Sandusky Central Catholic School. Beginning in Preschool, our students live out the mission of SCCS by Strengthening the Body, Challenging the Mind and Enriching the Spirit.

Through daily community-wide prayer, weekly liturgies, an intensive retreat program beginning in first grade, and grade level mentoring, we follow the call of Christ to be a light to the world.

  • Every school day begins and ends with daily prayer. These prayers are traditional prayers of the Roman Catholic Church, including the Angelus, Morning Offering, Prayer of Saint Michael and the Memorare. Students are often selected to read afternoon reflections to encourage students and staff to pause halfway through the day to reflect and participate in a self-examination.

  • Every week, students and staff attend Mass at one of our Sandusky parishes. All faculty, staff, parents, and friends are invited to attend our weekly Masses.  Masses are planned by teachers and students, and students serve as Altar Servers, Lectors, Music Ministers, Mass Coordinators, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

  • We are so blessed to have a chapel in our school—the All Saints Chapel—to which all students and staff have regular access. Every week on our “Mass Day” the Blessed Sacrament is exposed from 9:00am-2:30pm. Our elementary teachers regularly take their classes to allow them to be in the presence of our Lord—His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. Our junior high and high school students regularly take time from their lunch period/Theology classes to sit in His presence.

  • Students in grades 1-12 have the opportunity to experience retreats, a time away from regular classroom work to pray together, play together, and deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ on a level appropriate for their age. All retreats take place off of school grounds, whether at the local parishes, shrines, or other Churches in our Diocese. The Junior retreat is a multi-day retreat at Damascus in which the students participate in different fun activities as well as witnesses from the college-age missionaries who work there. The retreat experience at SCCS culminates with the Senior Kairos retreat.  Kairos is an amazing event that takes place over several days. Student leaders take on the role of giving witness to their peers for this retreat, which helps set the stage for the seniors taking on the new adventure of life after graduation.

  • Each student has the opportunity to go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation once a semester. Classes are assigned to remain behind following School Masses to provide the opportunity for the students who would like to go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Sacrament is also available by appointment with the school’s Priest Leader.

  • All teachers participate in a day-long retreat at the beginning of the academic year and a half-day retreat at the beginning of the second semester to have time together while growing in the faith. Throughout the year, teachers are also required to participate in professional development which emphasizes growth in their own lives of faith and how best to educate their students in the faith as well.

  • Preparation for the Sacraments of the Church usually occurs in the second and eighth grade for First Communion and Confirmation respectfully. There are opportunities for those students, staff, and families who have missed Sacraments, or who are not Catholic, to receive formation in the faith so as to receive the Sacraments appropriate to their current age. For students interested in becoming Catholic, they attend their regular religion class with their grade as well as outside the classroom formation with our Campus Minister in order to come to know the faith that they desire to profess. Families and staff receive their formation through the parishes that they belong to in order to receive the Sacraments.
